I'm a fitness editor and these are the five products under $40 that I'd recommend buying this Prime Day if you're trying to build muscle

Amazon Basic fitness products are already well-priced, but the Prime Day sale has made everything in the range ridiculously cheap

A man and a woman are working out in a gym next to each other. He wears shorts and a t-shirt with sneakers, she wears a vest, mid-calf leggings and sneakers. Her long hair is tied back in a pony tail. They are both squatting down, with their knees slightly bent, and one arm hanging in front of them grasping the handle of a kettlebell weight. Their other hand rests on their hip. They look towards each other and the woman is smiling.

I've been writing about fitness and covering the Prime Day sales for three years, and every time there's a big sales event I always repeat the same advice: if you're new to fitness, buy the cheap stuff.

While keen runners and dedicated lifters will benefit from specialized gear, you can build muscle and improve your cardio fitness with basic equipment. All you need to get started are some weights, a good mat and a little time.

Once you've figured out what kind of workouts you enjoy, you might want to invest in a better set of adjustable dumbbells and some good cross-training shoes, but don't spend hundreds of dollars before you've figured out what kind of exercise you like.

The Amazon Basics range is a good place to start if you want new workout tools. The dumbbells and kettlebells are already well-priced, but the current Prime Day sales event has made them even cheaper. Below are the five things I'd recommend buying if you want to start working out, which are all currently discounted to less than $40.

Amazon Basics exercise bench: was $49.99, now $39.99 at Amazon

Save 20% If you have the room, an exercise bench is a handy addition for workouts. You can use them for things like chest presses and single-arm dumbbell rows, and they will provide sturdy support for seated exercises too. Doing your exercises seated can help you isolate muscles and not 'cheat' by using momentum from your lower body. This one is a very reasonable price at just under $40.
