If you're someone who struggles with tight hips, you're not alone. It's a common issue, especially if you spend a lot of time sitting.

So why is giving your hips some TLC so important? "Sitting all day can shorten and weaken your hip flexors, leading to poor posture, back pain and limited mobility," explains personal trainer Emma McCaffrey. "Strengthening these muscles is crucial for improving your overall function and quality of life."

Not sure where to start? Certified personal trainer Deanna O'Donnell recently shared a five-move workout on Instagram that will `strengthen your hip flexors.

How to do Deanna O'Donnell's hip flexor workout

You can either do this as a standalone workout, completing six to eight reps for two to three rounds or simply add a few of the exercises to your existing routine.

For the full workout, you'll need a short resistance band, a very light kettlebell, something to lean against (like a box or your sofa) and a wall.

The benefits of strengthening your hip flexors

Stretching your hips can relieve tension and enhance mobility but that doesn’t address the root cause of the issue.

"Incorporating hip flexor strengthening exercises into your routine can help counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting, improve your posture, and reduce your risk of injury," says McCaffrey.

Plus, strengthening your hips can improve the way your body moves in everyday life and help offset the natural effects of aging on your hip joints.

"Strong hip flexors are the foundation for a healthy and active lifestyle," McCaffrey adds. "Don't neglect these important muscles."
